 Apollo 1 crew at launch complex 34, crosses an access arm to the command module for the last time at the Kennedy Space Center, "Pad 34". January 27, 1967. "One of the worst tragedies in the history of spaceflight occurred on this day when the crew of Gus Grissom, Ed White, and Roger Chaffee were killed by a flash fire during a pre-flight test.

 After the disaster, the mission was officially designated "Apollo 1" and "Complex 34" was declared a national historic landmark.
