"One of the worst tragedies in the history of spaceflight occurred onJanuary 27, 1967 when the crew of Gus Grissom, Ed White, and Roger Chaffee were killed by a flash fire during a pre-flight test. After the disaster, the mission was officially designated "Apollo 1" and "Complex 34" was declared a national historic landmark.
