April 9, 1967. "One of the worst tragedies in the history of spaceflight occurred on
January 27, 1967
when the crew of Gus Grissom, Ed White, and Roger Chaffee were killed by a flash fire during a pre-flight test. After the disaster, the mission was officially designated "Apollo 1" and "Complex 34" was declared a national historic landmark.
