American 82nd Airborne in C-47 transport over the English Channel are heading toCherbourg Peninsula at 0300 hours for "Operation Detroit" onJune 6, 1944. D-Day.

Operation Detroit was the main assault by parachute and glider from the 82nd Airborne Division into Normandy on the night of 5–6 June 1944, this was part of Operation Overlord. The drop zone for the 82nd Airborne was around Sainte-Mère-Église, to the west of Utah beach, intending to protect the western flank of the invasion force.
